Saint Hell

Saint Hell is a 2D role-playing game about heaven and hell, where the player is given a decisive role. From the very beginning it is clear that this is not about going after the final boss, but about trying to influence the fate of the whole world by choosing which side to support. The world is open for exploration: along the way there are hiding places, mysterious places and treasures that are best not ignored. Characters give tasks, and their attitude changes depending on the actions of the hero, so the same situation can be handled in different ways. The battles take place in the usual manner for the genre: squads fight with the evil spirits and their opponents on the side of heaven, and victories bring experience, equipment and new opportunities. The project is attractive not so much for its balance as for its freedom: here you can become both an instrument of retaliation and someone who tries to reconcile the parties. It is also worth noting that the squad is able to grow: as the story progresses, allies are found, each with their own character and skills. The battle is conducted in a step-by-step mode, which means that a mistake costs not nerves, but resources - potions and a supply of magic. The freedom of choice here is also felt in small things: you can abandon side quests and go into the plot, or you can clean out the entire region first. It’s also nice that the game has a lot of small tasks from residents: they fill the pauses between major events. Technically, Saint Hell remains a modest game, made by a clearly small team, with conventional graphics and a minimum of effects. But the idea of ​​choice and the atmosphere of confrontation between two forces make it an interesting find for those who are looking through rare role-playing games of the late nineties.
