Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is a role-playing game about a detective who conducts an investigation solely with his own skills. Interrogations, evidence, versions and suspicions are dealt with through the hero’s inner voices. The hero comes to his senses after a stormy night and gradually remembers who he is and how he ended up in this city. Different skills suggest different versions of events. The player can become the savior of the city or a disaster for all humanity: actions and remarks change the relationship with the characters and the outcome of the case. Bribes, drunkenness and self-destruction are also on the list of possibilities. Inner voices like logic, empathy and will argue with each other, and their replicas shape the character of the hero. Tasks are progressed through dialogues with a variety of people: from a trade union leader to teenagers on roller skates. Dialogues are the basis of the game: there is enough text here to fill a novel, and the interlocutors have long been considered one of the best in the genre. The world is presented as a dark alternative modernity with its own political movements and history. In addition to interrogations, there is work with the corpse, collecting evidence and talking with locals who are in no hurry to help. The Final Cut edition added voice acting for most characters, new tasks and political lines. The game is not in a hurry: the investigation progresses through conversations and observations. Modifications for the game are not supported by the authors, but the community has been discussing it for years. Updates added voice acting and political tasks, and mods expanded the space for experimentation. For those who love text-based RPGs and complex characters, this city provides a rare experience.
