Baba Is You

Baba Is You is a puzzle game created by indie developer Hempuli Oi. The graphics are pixelated and the camera is raised high, giving a wide view of the room. The rules are written right in the room: a word, a verb and an object form a statement that applies to the entire level. Ordinary stones, flags and walls serve as both an obstacle and a tool. The main feature is that the rules are written down in words right at the level: “the stone is you”, “the wall is the stop”. By moving blocks with inscriptions, the player changes the very laws of what is happening. It happens that the hero ceases to be himself and becomes part of the level, and the path to victory is blocked. Sometimes it’s easier to remove the loss condition from the room altogether than to look for a workaround. Because of this, solving a problem sometimes means that the hero turns into another object, and the victory conditions are rewritten on the fly. There are many levels, and the difficulty increases gradually. Levels are scattered across the map, and access to them opens as you solve riddles. The complexity increases due to the fact that there are more rules and less space. There is an editor, and the community creates its own sets of rules and puzzles. After completion, an editor opens where you can collect your own tasks and share them. Several worlds share a common set of mechanics, and completing one unlocks clues for the others. For those players who like ingenuity challenges, this room is suitable. The project grew out of a prototype competition and won several awards. There is also a mobile version, and the community publishes its own sets.
