Description
The Snowboarding offers winter country with plenty of descents and a simple task: complete the course and meet the allotted time. Twenty-seven routes vary in terrain, and on some the checkpoints are placed so that you have to look for a shortcut rather than go in a straight line.
There are modes both for one and for a group: you can compete with friends on a split screen, which was commonplace for snowboard arcades of those years. Speed is more important than tricks here, so control is built around acceleration, turns and the ability to avoid crashing into a tree.
Conditions change: in some places the track is wide and forgiving of mistakes, in others it is narrow and requires caution. As you progress, new slopes open up and the time you need to meet becomes more difficult. This is a simple but understandable motivation - to go a little faster than last time.
Separately, it is worth noting that the routes are opening gradually, and on new routes not only the length, but also the nature of the slope changes: somewhere you need to keep a high speed, somewhere you need to look for a detour. There are also different boards that influence management. Weather conditions also change, which makes the same descent different from the previous race. There is also a free skiing mode, where you don’t have to race against time, but calmly explore an unfamiliar slope.
In terms of design, the game is unpretentious and today looks almost sketchy. But as a short arcade game, the Snowboarding does its job: fast races, a clear goal and the pleasure of finally finding the descent line.
