Pathologic Classic HD - an epidemic begins on the outskirts of a steppe town, and the residents are divided into those who are trying to escape and those who are ready to profit from fear. In twelve days, the hero needs not so much to defeat the disease as to understand what is happening to this place. You can choose one of three characters: a scientist from the capital, a local doctor with the gift of prediction, and a girl who is considered an impostor. Everyone sees the city in their own way, meets different people and comes to their own conclusions, so you have to go through the same story three times. The townspeople are not obliged to explain their actions, so part of what is happening remains unclear until the very end. Survival is tough: the hero gets tired, hungry, gets infected and loses strength from any carelessness. The time of day is limited, only part of what is planned can be accomplished in a day, and night in the city is more dangerous than day. Conversations take up no less space than actions: locals bargain, lie, demand services and rush. Not everyone can be saved, and any choice leads to someone’s death - the characters themselves directly speak about this. Death here does not cancel progress, but only brings the outcome closer: the disease either recedes or takes its toll. Conversations can be carried on endlessly, but the time of day does not wait, and by nightfall the interlocutors disperse to their homes. The game looks ridiculous and dark at the same time, and this is a deliberate technique. For those who are ready for a slow, difficult story about a city on the edge where there are no right decisions. Sometimes the necessary information can only be obtained by completing someone else’s instructions, and this takes the whole day. Infection and fatigue can be treated with different means, so first aid kits and food are not in the inventory for beauty. To those who quit the game on the first day, it seems like a mockery; those who make it to the end usually feel uneasy.
