Description
What Remains of Edith Finch is a narrative game about the last representative of a famous family. Edith returns to the family mansion to understand the history of her relatives. Inspection of the rooms is free, and some doors open only after the necessary keys have been found. There are no timers or failures: the story moves at its own pace, and discoveries remain in memory.
The house is arranged in an unusual way: the rooms have been converted to suit the needs of the residents, and some rooms are locked and contain the belongings of the previous owners. Each discovery turns into a separate episode, told from the perspective of a family member. Stories of relatives are presented in different ways: somewhere it’s a comic book, somewhere it’s a game with mechanics, and somewhere it’s just a conversation. Sometimes an episode takes a couple of minutes, but is remembered for a long time.
Freedom of action is minimal, but emotions are conveyed through little things: habits, drawings, notes and how a person spent the day. The ending brings together disparate stories into one picture. The house itself looks like a character: extensions, secret passages and things keep the memory of each resident. The mansion is located on the shore, and the view from the windows adds sadness.
The game is short, but leaves a strong impression, and critics noted the work with the script and production. The narrator's voice narrates the story, and the music adjusts to the mood of the scenes. You can skip some scenes, but then the story will be incomplete.
For those who love stories about families and memories, this homestead is perfect. The project received acclaim for its production, and its episodes are often cited as examples of successful short form.
