Fimbul Winter VR is a first-person adventure in a world similar to the northern legend of the end of everything. The player takes on the role of a hermit who is trying to survive when winter is final and the usual order is no longer there. The view from the eyes enhances the effect: cold air, scant light and silence in which any sound seems like a threat. The world is open for exploration, but not safe. Along the way you encounter animals, spirits and traces of someone else’s presence, and your reserves of strength and warmth force you to plan every exit from the shelter. You have to look for supplies, set up a shelter and decide whether to risk going further or return while there is enough light. Combat encounters are not the main thing here; reading the situation is more important. When the enemy is clearly stronger, it is wiser to bypass or retreat rather than rush with an axe. In this sense, the game is closer to survival with adventure elements than to pure action, and this combination is rare for virtual reality. It is also worth noting that in virtual reality objects are taken by hand: firewood for a fire, snow for water, an ax for protection. The controls can be customized, including the method of movement - this is important for a helmet because your well-being depends on it. Saving your progress helps here: the winter world is unforgiving, and you won’t be able to go through it for a long time without a break. The project is small and made without large budgets, so it is rough in places. But he keeps the atmosphere honest: Fimbul Winter VR is about loneliness, cold and a stubborn desire to live until the next day.
