Black Book

Black Book is an adventure about witchcraft and evil spirits in the Perm region of the late nineteenth century. The main character Vasilisa has dark knowledge, and her story begins with a personal misfortune, because of which she is forced to go against what is hidden in the villages and forests. Battles are presented as card fights: spells and creatures from your own set are used against evil spirits, and the outcome depends on the order of the cards. As the journey progresses, the deck grows, and along with it, the approach to battles changes. There is also research: villages, cemeteries, abandoned huts, conversations with locals. The basis of the game is folklore: conspiracies, rituals, beliefs, collected based on real sources. This makes the story feel not like fiction, but an echo of real ideas about the world. It’s also worth noting that the card battles in the game are turn-based, and each opponent has their own weaknesses, so the deck is selected in advance. In addition to battles, there are quests that reward new cards and items, as well as rare encounters that influence the story. The design deserves special mention: the illustrations and sound are designed in the spirit of a northern village, and this adds to the atmosphere. The material is dark in places, with folkloric details that may seem unusual. The game is long and requires reading.
