Сталкер: Тень Чернобыля is a first-person shooter game set in the Exclusion Zone around the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The player takes on the task of delivering important data and is gradually drawn into local conflicts. The plot begins with the death of a merchant and the delivery of important data to his employer. Gradually, the investigation takes the hero deep into the Zone, to the places marked on the map by the guides. There are plenty of differences from other shooters: bullet ballistics are taken into account here, and weapons wear out and require modernization. Artifacts provide useful properties, but are located in abnormal places, so each raid requires preparation. Weapons are divided into classes, and wear and tear on parts makes every shootout risky. Some barrels can be improved by mechanics. The zone is divided between factions with their own rules, and mutants and weather emissions add to the danger. Side quests and merchants form a vibrant economy, and the simulation system makes the world independent of the player. Anomalies are divided by type and punish predictably: gravitational traps, burning spots and electrical discharges. Experienced stalkers remember safe paths. The ending depends on how much truth was learned about the causes of the disaster. The community supports the game with modifications that change the graphics and balance. Emissions change the behavior of mutants, so it’s better to sit out after them. For those players who love harsh raids in the Zone, this road is suitable. Additions and patches appeared after release, and fan modifications are still reworking the graphics.
