OCTOPATH TRAVELER allows you to choose one of eight heroes, and each has their own path, their own tasks and their own reason for going on the road. Pharmacist, huntress, dancer, warrior - the stories do not intersect by themselves, but they can be put together in one team and the biographies of everyone can gradually be revealed. The combat system is based on weaknesses: the enemy is vulnerable to weapons and elements, and by identifying the vulnerability, you deal more damage. There are also points that are spent on additional actions - this creates tactics where moves are more important than levels. Individual bosses require preparation and the right composition. The world is divided into regions with their own troubles, and along the way there are short stories of the inhabitants. The tone of the game is serious, sometimes melancholy, and the structure resembles a collection of stories connected by a common journey. Separately, it is worth noting that the order in which the characters progress is free, and this determines which story will open first and which will be postponed until later. You can take companions into your squad according to your taste, but each has their own role: healer, warrior, magician, hunter. The interactions between the characters in the squad are revealed through brief exchanges and scenes together, and this significantly enlivens the journey. It’s also worth noting that there are a lot of additional things to do in the game: find rare resources, help residents, defeat optional bosses - all this gives experience and items. The graphics deliberately combine pixelated figures with three-dimensional landscapes, and it looks unusual. The game is long and requires attention to detail, but it is precisely for this thoroughness that fans of classic role-playing games appreciate it.
