Resident Evil 2 (1998)

Resident Evil 2 - a virus escaped from the mansion and covered the entire Raccoon City. Leon Kennedy is a new police officer who, on his first day of work, finds himself in a city where there are almost no people left on the streets. Claire Redfield comes here in search of her brother. Keys and puzzles like seals require careful attention, and some rooms can only be opened by certain characters. Each character goes through his own story, and the campaigns complement each other: in one place the heroes intersect, and some doors can only be opened for a specific hero. Therefore, it makes sense to go through the story twice. There are few weapons, and every cartridge is spent consciously, and it is better to bypass some of the monsters. The controls are classic for those years: fixed angles, awkward turns and limited inventory. Ammo counts as items, herbs and first aid kits are collected from what you find, and storage boxes force you to decide what to take with you. The documents and records explain how the corporation leaked the leak, adding context to the story. The atmosphere is kept in silence: footsteps in an empty corridor and the sound of dripping water are more frightening than the monsters themselves. In addition to zombies, there are more dangerous creatures, and some of the tasks are related to the secrets of the site and dungeons under the city. Individual scenes depend on the order of actions, which makes repeat playthroughs meaningful. Some encounters with monsters are better to wait out than to fight in a narrow corridor. Between the scenes there are notes, from which it becomes clearer what was happening in the city in those days. For those who want to see what the series was like before all the remakes.
