Dead Space sends engineer Isaac Clarke aboard the ship Ishimura, from where communications have ceased. Instead of the usual repairs, he has to make his way through compartments where people have turned into monsters, and the only connection with the outside world is interrupted messages. The hero does not have weapons as such: he has to use industrial tools invented for mining and repair. The main mechanic is dismemberment. Shooting at the body is useless: to stop the creature, you need to shoot off the limbs, and this reverses the usual approach to combat. Together with the health indicator placed on the hero’s back and the interface built into the suit, the game displays almost no unnecessary elements on the screen - this creates a constant feeling of presence. The atmosphere here is more important than the shootouts: the roar of engines, dark corridors, noise in the ventilation and the constant expectation that there is something around the corner. The plot twists are revealed gradually, and by the end a picture emerges of what happened on the ship and what the strange artifacts have to do with it. It’s also worth noting that the game allows you to upgrade your costume and weapons: upgrades change not only your characteristics, but also your behavior in battle. Recordings and audio diaries are collected gradually, and through them the history of the station and the people who found themselves on board is revealed. For horror, this is the standard for telling a story through details. Dead Space is considered the standard of space horror: it scares not with popping shadows, but with hopelessness and claustrophobia. For those who want to play a cult game in the genre, this is a must.
