The longer a character lives, the stronger he becomes. Clothes wear out and have to be replaced. The territory is spacious: coniferous tracts give way to villages. A compass and map help you navigate. Transport is rare and requires repair. It is better to set up camp for the night away from roads. The map is named after Czech and Polish forests, and this is evident in the architecture of the villages. Death means losing everything you had with you. At night the temperature drops and clothing is more important than weapons. The infected roam in groups. The sound of a shot gathers them from all over the area. The infected gather around cities. New types of weapons add variety to battles. Rivers serve as landmarks and sources of water. Tagged animals provide meat and skins. Supplies spoil, so stocks have to be renewed. Food, water and medicine are being searched from house to house. The weather turns bad without warning. Meetings with other players end differently. Conversations with other survivors end differently. The servers support co-op, but trusting strangers is risky. Hunting lodges provide shelter for the night. Radio stations report world news.
