Black Mesa

Black Mesa is a remake of the cult shooter Half-Life, which at one time revolutionized the idea of ​​gaming and brought fame to Valve. Work on the project took eight years, and all this time the authors transferred the old game to the Source engine. The result was worthy: the familiar corridors of “Black Mesa” were reassembled, and some of the levels were redesigned and expanded. Both the graphics and sound with animation have been improved, making old scenes feel new. The remake added new scenes and reworked some of the puzzles, while maintaining the classic rhythm. Some opponents received new brothers, and the physics of objects became more accurate. The battles remained the same in spirit: a crowbar, a pistol, a shotgun and experimental devices found in the complex. The soldiers and aliens behave just as stubbornly, and the puzzles have retained their classic simplicity. Opponents operate according to familiar patterns, but with new details: soldiers cover each other, and alien creatures come from all sides. The shortage of ammo and first aid kits is more acute than in modern shooters, so stocking up is important here. The controls remain simple, and all the difficulties lie in the combat and puzzles. A special chapter is Xen: it was completely redone, adding new levels and bosses. Fans appreciated this approach, although debate about which option is better still rages. The music and sound have been rewritten from scratch, but familiar motifs are recognizable from the first notes. Individual fan projects around the universe grew precisely on this foundation. For anyone who wants to experience a familiar story in an updated form, this remake is a must.
